Born in Edinburgh in 1958, Iain began his Brass Band career with Penicuik Silver Band at the age of fourteen.  Initially playing the cornet he quickly moved to Tenor Horn, and has never looked back.  Later playing with National Youth Brass Band of Scotland, Newtongrange Silver, Hammonds Sauce Works (Now YBS) and Faireys Engineering Bands, Iain has settled with Whitburn Band where he has been Principal Horn since 1984.

As a soloist with bands he has played all over the world, and has many titles to his name. Three times Scottish Solo Champion and five times East of Scotland champion, Iain also has trophies for best Horn in the Scottish Solo Championships, and won best soloist over forty twice in three years.  In 2004 he was the first winner of the new prize for best horn awarded at the Scottish Brass Band Championships and won it again in March 2006.  Not content with Scottish solo titles, he was twice winner of the National Mineworkers Tenor Horn prize when Principal Horn with Newtongrange in the 1980’s and in November 2006 was awarded 5th place overall and best Horn at the British Open Solo Championships.

Conducting has allowed Iain to pass on knowledge he has gained from some of the best known conductors in the Brass Band world.  He began his conducting career where he began his playing, with Penicuik Silver Band.  With Cowdenbeath Band Iain won an amazing 9 trophies at the Fife Charities contest in the Carnegie Hall during 1996.  Moving to Dalkeith and Monktonhall Band Iain was Musical Director in 2002 when they were overall winners at Brass in the Park in Newtongrange.  Iain spent four years with Border’s Peebles Burgh Silver Band; in that time the band were promoted to the Third Section and won their section at Brass in the Park and Borders Entertainment contests. He is at present the resident conductor of the Newtongrange Silver Band.  

Iain is currently studying Music at Stevenson College, Edinburgh; achieving distinctions in both the ATCL and LTCL diploma exams. After completing the course he hopes to teach brass in schools and pass on his vast experience to young brass players.
